Pride in Service: A Waiter’s Unwavering Dedication Despite Sons’ Success in Multinationals

I am from Thrissur. In 1978, soon after my 10th, I took a train to try my luck in Bangalore. In 1988, I got married. I worked for 10 years as a tailor before joining a hotel. I worked in another hotel but when the management changed, we weren’t treated with respect. Unlike my peers, I took the courage to quit and soon joined Koshy’s. I have been here for 20 years now.

I have three sons. My eldest son is working in Goldman Sachs and the middle in Northern Trust whereas, my youngest one is studying in Christ college. People find it strange that I continue to work as a waiter while my kids work in multinational companies. But how does it matter? I love my job and I am proud of what I do. That’s it. Every day, I meet and serve different people and sometimes even celebrities, but everyone is treated with the same passion and care. The best part is when customers acknowledge and smile at us.

I will retire after a year or so and spend time with my wife. Though ours was a love marriage, we haven’t had the time for each other. We were too busy bringing up our children. Now that they are all settled, I am looking forward to falling in love with my wife all over again, pick up a new hobby and tick off the contents on the bucket list. I am excited about this, after all, retirement is about a new phase, right?
